Sadly, one of our neighbors was attacked on Balmoral and Broadway at noon this past Saturday. Please be aware that this person never saw or heard the attackers approach. If you know of a similar incident please go to Yahoo groups Edgewater Beach Neighbors and post a comment to everyone, one note you might have to join the group first. The member was doing ok when last notified.
EBNA had two events this past December. For the December 15th event where 75+ tenants from Bryn Mawr Care were fed quite well. I would like to thank Leif Forres Wall to Wall Framing who provided the main dish, Superfoods, DeAndre K., Mimi Harris, Jerry Cohen, Mitch and Dan, Ann and Fred Plewa, Carmen, and Heidi, Maxine, and Joe Arnold. Without these people the event would not have been possible.
For the Dec 20th event a thank you goes to Miss Ollie, Ann and Fred, Charles Bonilla and Joe Arnold. Once again without these people the event would not have been possible. Senate candidate Heather Stean stopped by and spoke with everyone. And then there was Ernie C. (Alderman Smiths office) with his entourage. There were raffle prizes and of course Miss Ollie. P.S nice seeing you Almenia, you look marvelous.

Because of the due diligence of EBNA President Ann Plewa and Fred Plewa:
This condominium conversion of multi-unit building has been a long-time target of ECC, EBNA block club and 48th ward due to shoddy construction and lack of permits. At last hearing on Sept. 6, developer Ilie Venter was ordered to send engineering report to the City for review, because of concerns about the safety of the support columns in the garage and on the 1st floor. Developer was also ordered to get new plans approved by the City, to get proper permits and to come up with a reasonable time frame for the work to be completed. Stop Work order has been lifted and evidently work has resumed on the building.
Request made to City Attorney and DOB on Oct. 30 for new inspection to make sure all work is being done up to code.
Note: Mutual Bank has filed to foreclose on $13.2 million loan to Venter and AssociatesECC spoke at length with Maria Zas, DOL.. Basically, Venter is back at "square one":--Venter has presented inadequate plans e.g. the plans list it as a 3 story building when, of course, it's actually a 4 story. So he will be required to present new plans.--
The new plans will have to be approved.--At an inspection of 3 units picked at random where the wall was removed for electrical/plumbing inspection, many code violations were found e.g. not having proper conduits around electrical wires.--Because of these violations found at the 3 sample units, Venter will now have to remove all the walls in all 90 units, which will be very expensive.
--The work will have to be redone to code.
--In order to obtain permits he had to pay over $25,000 in fines for violating the previous Stop Work orders.
--He will also have to present a rough-in schedule and a schedule of completion.
--He has a whole lot to accomplish before a Cert. of Occupancy could possibly be given.
--The building remains in foreclosure. Venter likely does not have enough money to do the necessary work and will lose the building.
Ridge Fire Station Community Planning Meeting
(from Edgewater Community Council)
Representatives of Edgewater Baptist Church (our hosts) and Sue Morales of ETNA Block Club, President Nancy Schroeder of the Edgewater Community Council (ECC) (our sponsor), and Marge Britton of Alderman Mary Ann Smith's office all welcomed about 50 participants to the meeting. They provided background on a planning process that can result in recommendations for the adaptive reuse of the Ridge Firehouse at the completion of the new regional firestation (anticipated later this year).
rainstorming kicked off with small groups identifying and reporting back to the large group about:Dreams and Possibilities for the firehouse Issues & Challenges for the location/vicinity Things We Want to Learn Keys to Successful Planning Supporter & AlliesCommon themes of Dreams and Possibilities were that the facility should be maintained as a community asset and be used for community purposes. Most ideas for the facility suggested programs and services related to not-for-profit uses.
However, there was a real openness to proposals that might come from public agencies or for-profit sponsors that also engage or benefit the community. All ideas were welcomed at this state and sentiments expressed laid the foundation for future deliberations. Some suggested a meeting space that could be available to the community or physical improvements and maintenance representative of "green buildings." Some wanted a multi-purpose site, while others suggested special services and programming. These ideas and examples for community services, including youth, parenting and elderly programming as well as arts gallery/classes or space for the performing arts. Job training for the culinary arts, union-suppoprted trade/apprenticeshi pprograms, International Rescue/World Relief Services, and collarborations with Senn High School or the Baptist Church were all listed as possibilities. Other expressed an openness fro public uses, like having a northside Environmental Center, year-round farmers market or food pantry, or private uses like a coffee shop, restaurant or service company.

January 12, Saturday 8:30am - 12:30pm • St. Gertrude Social Hall 1401 W. GranvilleFree Workshop • Free Parking AvailableDear Artist:Whether you’ve walked by it and read a tile, or biked by and saw the fish, or drove by while your car lights sparkled in the mirrors, “Living 2007” is Edgewater’s premier public art project located on the north wall of the Bryn Mawr underpass at Lake Shore Drive. “Living 2007” was a success in great part to the visioning and guidance of art educators and faith community leaders who empowered community people to participate in its creation.
The companion mural, “Growing 2008,” is scheduled for the south wall of the Bryn Mawr underpass, and you have an opportunity to get involved. Give your students, co-workers, friends, neighbors, and congregants the opportunity to discover and contribute their talents to this project. It will look stunningly beautiful, and you can all proudly say, “We helped. We got involved. We made a difference.”When you attend this Trainer Skillbuild Workshop you’ll learn techniques for Bricolage object-making, including how to create low-relief ceramic sculpture, and how to design, transfer and glaze an image onto a tile. After these images are fired, artworks will be considered for inclusion in the “Growing, 2008” mural.
After this trainer workshop we can assist you in facilitating your workshops or happenings throughout the Spring to prepare objects for the July 2008 installation.
